SAMPLES

Example 1

Samples 1 and 2 have been taken from a very poor condition 78 rpm record from the 1950's. The disc is especially fragile as it is cracked from the outer edge to the inner lead-out groove (photos).

Effectively unplayable due to its fragility and the loud clicks evident on playback (sample 1), it nevertheless provides an excellent example to demonstrate the effectiveness of the restoration process in salvaging such recordings (sample 2).

Sample 1 (52 sec) - no restoration (except for previous VPI wet-vac clean) - background crackle present and very prominent loud regular clicks due to crack.

Sample 2 (52 sec) - Track restored using appropriate equalisation (Elberg MD12) and CEDAR DUO restoration tools - effectively reducing clicks and crackle to an almost inaudible level. Steinberg Clean software used for final ‘troublesome' clicks and to improve overall sound.

Example 2

Samples 3 and 4 demonstrate the difference restoration can make on a slightly more recent 78 rpm record, which although brighter to start with, suffers from the ‘chip-pan' crackling in the background.

Sample 3 (49 sec) - No restoration, except for VPI wet-vacuum clean. ‘Chip-pan crackle' very noticeable.

This artefact is effectively removed by the CEDAR DUOs, and the bass response is enhanced slightly using appropriate equalisation (Elberg MD12) and Steinberg Clean software, to give a very satisfying end result.

Sample 4 (48 sec) - Final restored track, minus the crackling, benefits from the use of the correct equalisation curve and subtle bass and treble enhancements.
